Ohio and Cleveland can be proud of many female lawyers who served as pioneers for women
lawyers today. Some prominent examples from history include these distinguished women:

1st female assistant county prosecutor in the United States (Assistant Prosecutor for Cuyahoga County, 1919-1921); 1st woman elected to a judicial office in Ohio (Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court, 1921-1922); 1st woman to be elected to the Supreme Court of Ohio (1922-1934); 1st woman to be appointed to a federal appeals court judgeship (United States Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit, 1934-1959)

Sara J. Harper:
1st African American woman to graduate from Case Western Reserve University School of Law; 1st woman to serve on the judiciary of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve; 1 of the first 2 women to sit on an Ohio Court of Appeals (8th District); 1st African American woman appointed to sit on the Ohio Supreme Court (1992); founded the Sara J. Harper Library in the early 1990s at Outhwaite on East 43rd Street; retired Board member of the Cuyahoga County Law Library Resources Board (2009-2012)
